I think that the author presents a very valid argument in that we now all have the responsibility to help others and level the playing field, and that today’s athletes are slowly losing their place atop their altar in society. Although I am a sports fanatic and am not sure what I would do without being able to watch my favorite teams play, I am sure that over time this passion for sports (which is definitely just a game) would convert itself into a passion of some other type. And maybe that’s what the world needs, all these sports fans that are so passionate about the game, that spend trillions of dollars on fantasy sports, merchandise, tickets, travel, satellite dishes, and spend years of their lives surfing the internet, reading the news, and on the couch; that these passionate people (including myself) should convert these passions into something beneficial to the world and not just to themselves. Like become a sports coach, build recreational facilities, or mentor a child. Just a thought….

I agree the author and you make some interesting and valid points. I think we all can find a balance of support for our sports teams, without becoming obsessed. This will leave plenty of passion or energy for more worthy endeavors.
